Molecular BiologyThe Proteomics Standards Initiative session of the Human Proteome Organization (HUPO) 2005 congress was opened by the current chair, Rolf Apweiler of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory - European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), who summarized the achievements of the HUPO Proteomics Standards Initiative (HUPO-PSI) to date. The Molecular Interaction XML interchange standard is already widely used, and all of the major publicly available databases now make data available in this format [1].

Encoding non-genetic information in DNA

(Read More... | Score: 2.33)
Molecular Biologyderekmatthews writes " This patent has just been accepted by the UKPO. It describes methods of encoding information within the base sequence of a nucleic acid molecule other than through the genetic code. The embedded information may use a mechanism of Huffman coding and/or error checking, preferably by a parity check or convolutional code. The information may also be embedded in a quaternary code or by the absolute or relative lengths of restriction enzyme cleaved fragments, which preferably form a series of digits in binary or quaternary code. Also claimed are methods of decoding such information and host cells containing polynucleotides with such embedded information."

Molecular Biologybio_informatica writes "The next advances in biology may rely on networked systems research, but will have little to do with computers or telecommunications infrastructure.

Instead, if an influential group of researchers has its way, techniques used to analyze interconnected systems will provide a better understanding of the most complex network of all: the human body.

Molecular Biologysgs writes "A team of investigators at The Scripps Research Institute and its Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology in La Jolla, California has modified a form of the bacterium Escherichia coli to use a 22-amino acid genetic code.

In an upcoming issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the team describes how they engineered this modified form of E. coli to make myoglobin proteins with 22 amino acids -- incorporating the unnatural amino acids O-methyl-L-tyrosine and L-homoglutamine in addition to the naturally occurring 20.

(Read More... | 3243 bytes more | Score: 0)
Molecular BiologyThe draft genome sequence of the brown Norway laboratory rat, Rattus norvegicus, has been completed by the Rat Genome Sequencing project Consortium, the consortium said on Wednesday. This is the third mammalian genome to be sequenced to a high degree of quality, and published in a major scientific journal. Efforts are underway to compare this genome to that of the other two sequenced genomes, the mouse and human.

Molecular BiologyThe National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), announced yesterday that the first draft of the chicken genome sequence has been deposited into free public databases for use by biomedical and agricultural researchers around the globe.
A team led by Richard Wilson, Ph.D., from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis successfully assembled the genome of the Red Jungle Fowl, Gallus gallus, which is the ancestor of domestic chickens. Comprised of about 1 billion DNA base pairs, the chicken genome is the first avian genome to be sequenced.
